The foundation stone was laid in Feb 5th 1888 and took three years (nearly to the day) to build, being completed and opened on Feb 8th 1891. Originally built as a convent and then serving as a school for many, many years, this old building has seen much over its time. It saw many of the great pioneering men of agriculture, it saw the mining booms and busts and booms again. Great Droughts have come and gone along with great floods, who’s high water marks, just down the hill, can be seen from the beautiful shaded verandah. It’s seen the the great advancements of the train networks come and go again and the motor car replace the horse and cart. It’s lived through great wars, while many around it did not.
This grand building stands today as a testament to the care, the skill and the ingenuity of those who built it and submits itself to its guests as a place of refuge, a place of care and a place of good will, as it did those many years before..
Flash Jacks of Gundagai is about Comfort, Style and Relaxation. Our 9 rooms and our grounds have all been designed and fitted out using this very simple principle. The textures and fabrics used pay homage to the very materials that made Australian Pioneers world leaders in the Wool, Steel and Timber industries for nearly 200 years. The connections of the past have been lovingly addressed in every detail that makes this hotel honest and unique in its appeal.
